I got a call back from Castrol.ca and they do not carry an 5W30 with diesel rating equivalent. Our "rebrand" JD1050 has been a real peach, No major issues since '87. It's sure enough a rebrand as it looks exactly like it's yanmar equal except for paint and emblems. I'd expected the 990 to be the same as it's a near 100% yanmar. I've gotten one of their aftermarket Rapid Response clutches and the weights and spring are for a gas engine which tend to have a wider RPM range than a diesel. Also, make sure you get or make a clutch removal tool.
The voltage across the lugs of the solenoid should be the same as the voltage of the battery. If not, you either have a defective solenoid, bad/loose wiring connection, or the battery is bad.
